Threadfin Rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri)
The Threadfin Rainbowfish is a delicate and elegant freshwater fish known for its long, flowing fins and iridescent coloration. It is a peaceful species that thrives in well-maintained community aquariums.
Key Information:
• Maximum Size: Around 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
• Native Habitat: Found in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and floodplains in northern Australia and New Guinea.
• Growth Rate: They grow relatively fast, reaching adult size within 6–8 months under optimal conditions.
• Life Span: Typically 3–5 years, though they can live longer with excellent care.
• Diet: Omnivorous – They eat small insects, plankton, algae, high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Due to their small mouths, they require finely crushed or small-sized food.
• Breeding Season: In the wild, they spawn during the rainy season, but in captivity, they can breed year-round. They are egg scatterers, laying eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Males display vibrant colors and extended fins to attract females.
• Best Tank Mates:
• Other small, peaceful fish (e.g., Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras)
• Small Rasboras (Chili Rasboras, Harlequin Rasboras)
• Corydoras Catfish
• Otocinclus Catfish
• Peaceful Gouramis (e.g., Sparkling Gouramis)
• Avoid aggressive, large, or fin-nipping fish like Barbs or larger Cichlids.
Additional Care Tips:
• Best kept in schools of at least 6 to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress.
• Require a minimum tank size of 15–20 gallons, with gentle filtration and calm water flow.
• Prefer water temperatures between 75–82°F (24–28°C) and a pH of 6.0–7.5.
• A well-planted aquarium with soft, fine-leaved plants (e.g., Java Moss, Hornwort) provides an ideal environment.
