The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a stunning freshwater fish known for its vibrant red and black coloration. It is an active and peaceful species, making it a great addition to community aquariums.
Basic Information:
• Maximum Size: 3 inches (7.5 cm)
• Native From: Myanmar (Burma); originally found in fast-moving rivers and streams
• Growth Rate: They grow quickly and reach full size within 6-12 months
• Life Span: 4-5 years, though some may live longer with proper care
• Diet: Omnivorous – they eat a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, plant matter, and live/frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
Breeding & Tank Setup:

Best Tank Mates:
Odessa Barbs are peaceful but energetic and do well in community tanks. Ideal tank mates include:
• Other Odessa Barbs (keep in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress)
• Cherry Barbs
• Rosy Barbs
• Zebra Danios
• Harlequin Rasboras
• Rainbowfish
• Corydoras Catfish
• Loaches (Yo-Yo Loach, Kuhli Loach)
They are generally not aggressive but may nip fins if kept in small groups. Avoid long-finned fish like Angelfish and Betta fish.
