The Red Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp. "Red") is a stunning and vibrant freshwater fish known for its brilliant red coloration and peaceful temperament compared to other African cichlids. It is a favorite among cichlid enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and relatively easy care.

Scientific Name:

Aulonocara sp. "Red"

Maximum Size:

  • Can grow up to 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) in captivity.

Native Region:

  • Originally derived from Lake Malawi, Africa.
  • Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara species) are found in rocky and sandy areas of the lake, where they search for food in the substrate.

Diet (Carnivorous or Omnivorous?)

  • Omnivorous, but prefers a high-protein diet.
  • In the wild, they feed on small crustaceans, insects, and invertebrates found in the sand.
  • In captivity, they thrive on:
✅ High-quality cichlid pellets and flakes
✅ Frozen or live foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysis shrimp)
✅ Occasional vegetable-based foods (spirulina, blanched spinach)
Avoid feeder fish and high-fat foods, as they can cause health issues.

Lifespan:

  • Typically 6-8 years, but can live up to 10 years with proper care.

Breeding Season & Behavior:

  • Mouthbrooder—females hold fertilized eggs in their mouths until the fry hatch.
  • Breeding can occur year-round in captivity if conditions are ideal.
  • Males become extremely colorful and territorial when ready to breed.
  • The female carries the fry in her mouth for about 2-3 weeks before releasing them.

Best Tank Mates:

Red Peacock Cichlids are less aggressive than many other African cichlids and do well in a Malawi cichlid community tank with:

Other Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara species)
Haplochromis Cichlids (Haps)
Synodontis Catfish (for bottom cleaning)
Non-aggressive Mbuna (only in large tanks)

🚫 Avoid:

  • Highly aggressive cichlids (Mbuna, Red Devils, Texas Cichlids).
  • Slow-moving or small fish, as they may be bullied.
  • Delicate fish that require very different water parameters.

Ideal Tank Conditions:

  • Tank Size: 55 gallons minimum, but 75+ gallons is ideal for multiple males.
  • Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)
  • pH: 7.5-8.5 (alkaline water, similar to Lake Malawi).
  • Water Hardness: Moderate to hard.
  • Filtration: Strong filtration is needed to maintain water quality.
  • Décor: Provide rock formations, caves, and open swimming space.
  • Substrate: Fine sand, as they like to sift through it for food.

⚠ Important Note:

  • Males display intense red coloration, while females are usually duller or grayish.
  • Keeping multiple males may cause territorial disputes, so a 1 male to multiple females ratio is recommended.
