Denison Barb (Sahyadria denisonii)
Also known as Roseline Shark, Red-Line Torpedo Barb, or Miss Kerala
Maximum Size:
Denison Barbs can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in captivity.
Native Habitat:
They are native to India, specifically found in the fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Western Ghats, including the states of Kerala and Karnataka.
Growth Rate:
They have a moderate to fast growth rate, reaching their full size within 1-2 years under optimal conditions.
Life Span:
With proper care, they can live 5-8 years in captivity.
Diet (Carnivorous or Omnivorous?):
Denison Barbs are omnivorous, meaning they consume both plant and animal matter. Their diet includes:
• High-quality pellets and flakes
• Live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
• Vegetables (blanched spinach, peas, cucumber)
• Algae wafers
Breeding Season & Reproduction:
• Breeding Denison Barbs in captivity is challenging, and they are mostly bred commercially using hormone treatments.
• In the wild, they spawn during the monsoon season when water conditions change.
• They are egg scatterers, meaning they release eggs in open water without parental care.
Best Tank Mates:
Denison Barbs are peaceful but active schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more. Suitable tank mates include:
• Other peaceful barbs (such as Odessa Barbs, Cherry Barbs)
• Rainbowfish
• Tetras (such as Congo Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras)
• Gouramis
• Loaches (such as Clown Loaches, Yoyo Loaches)
• Corydoras catfish
Tank Requirements:
• Minimum tank size: 55 gallons (208 liters) for a small school, but 75+ gallons (284+ liters) is recommended for larger groups.
• Strong filtration and high oxygenation to mimic their natural fast-flowing habitat.
• Water parameters: pH 6.5-7.5, temperature 72-79°F (22-26°C).
• Provide plenty of swimming space, plants, and driftwood for a natural environment.
The Denison Barb is a vibrant, fast-moving fish that adds color and activity to community aquariums. However, they require a large tank, stable water conditions, and a group of their own kind to thrive.
