Common Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.)
The Common Bristlenose Pleco is a hardy and popular freshwater catfish known for its unique bristle-like tentacles on its head, algae-eating abilities, and peaceful temperament. It is a great choice for community aquariums.
Key Information:
• Maximum Size: Typically grows to 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in length.
• Native Habitat: Originally from the Amazon River Basin in South America, found in rivers, streams, and floodplains with driftwood and plant cover.
• Growth Rate: They grow steadily, reaching around 3 inches (7–8 cm) within the first year, with full growth in 1.5–2 years.
• Life Span: Typically 5–8 years, but can live up to 10 years with excellent care.
• Diet: Omnivorous, with a strong preference for plant-based foods. They consume algae, vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), sinking pellets, and wafers. They also enjoy occasional protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
• Breeding Season: Can breed year-round in captivity if provided with the right conditions. Males guard eggs in caves, and the eggs hatch in 4–10 days. Fry feed on biofilm, algae, and crushed pellets.
• Best Tank Mates:
• Peaceful community fish (Tetras, Rasboras, Guppies, Mollies)
• Corydoras Catfish
• Other small or medium-sized Plecos
• Gouramis
• Rainbowfish
• Shrimp and snails
• Avoid aggressive fish like large Cichlids, which may harass them.
Additional Care Tips:
• Tank Size: Minimum 20–30 gallons, as they are bottom dwellers that need space to explore.
• Water Conditions: Prefer temperatures between 73–81°F (23–27°C) and a pH of 6.5–7.5.
• Tank Setup: Provide driftwood (aids digestion), caves, and plenty of hiding spots.
• Algae Control: While they help clean algae, they still require supplemental food to stay healthy.
